FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

While working with customers, we’re constantly learning about their needs and managing inquiries that arise. As a result, we’ve included a list of frequently asked questions along with answers in order to provide additional support. If your question isn’t addressed below, get in touch with us and we’ll provide the information you need.

WHAT IS EAR WAX?

The ear is normally self-cleaning by producing wax.  Ear wax is a natural secretion of the glands in the outer ear or ear canal. Wax plays an important role in keeping the ear healthy.  Symptoms of excessive wax include:

• Fullness sensation in the ear
• Reduced hearing
• Increased tinnitius
• Unusual noises in the ear
• Discomfort / Pain

When the self-cleaning ability of the ear fails, some people need help to remove wax and relieve unwanted symptoms.

WHAT IS MICROSUCTION?

Microsuction is a wax removal procedure using an instrument to suck unwanted / excessive wax and skin cells from the ear canal.

We use surgical lenses (loupes) which allow for magnification so that the tip of the suction tube is always under direct vision.

This technique differs to ear syringing as it does not require water to dislodge wax.

During the procedure we may need to use other instruments to help remove hard wax.

WHY IS MICROSUCION BETTER THAN OTHER FORMS OF WAX REMOVAL?

When comparing microsuction to more traditional forms of wax removal such as ear drops, irrigation or syringing, this technique is:

• Safer.
• Quicker.
• Cleaner.
• More precise.
• Gentler procedure.
• Generally better tolerated.
• Have fewer side effects.
• More effective.
• More likely to only need one appointment.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN HAVING MICROSUCTION

When you attend clinic we will ask you questions about your ear problems and general health. We then exam your ears and assess wether you require microsuctiin.  We will talk you through the procedure, show you the equipment and ask you to sign a consent form before we start.

The nurse will ask you to sit on a comfortable chair. They will gather the equipment needed together before starting the procedure.  Microsuction involves placing a small suction catheter into your ear and sucking the wax / skin / infection away. Occasionally we will have to using other instruments to assist removing the wax. Please stay as still as possible during the procedure.

The microsuction process is noisy and take take some time to complete. Please allow 30 minutes for your visit.

PREPARATION PRIOR TO YOUR VISIT.

Prior to the Procedure it is really important that you try and soften the ear wax by putting two drops of olive oil into the relevant ear/ears, twice daily, for a week prior to your appointment.

HOW LONG WILL MY APPOINTMENT TAKE?

The microsuction process can sometimes take a while to complete.  If you are having the procedure undertaken on both ears, it will take up to 30 minutes.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICROSUCTION?

The intended benefits of microsuction are:
* To remove wax and skin cells from the ear
* To possibly improve hearing
* To possibly improve tinnitus
* Relieve pain / discomfort

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF MICROSUCTION?

None removal of ear wax: - If you decide not to get wax removed from your ears this is ‘risk-free’.

Removing wax with microsuction can carry risks, these can include: -

1. Incomplete Clearance: This is the main risk of the procedure and sometimes it is just not possible to remove all the wax in one appointment. The nurse will inform you if it is looking tricky and she may need to give you some drops to use for a week and book you back in for a repeat treatment.

2. Dizziness: Microsuction ‘cools’ the temperature inside the ear canal which can lead to faintness, dizziness or vertigo. This is due to the ‘caloric’ effect and usually passes within a few seconds. We advise you to keep your eyes open during the procedure

3. Cough: The procedure may make you cough or have a tickle in your throat. This is quite harmless and will pass when the procedure is over.

4. Trauma (grazing of the ear canal): This can be avoided if you keep as still as possible during the procedure. Occasional bleeding from the ear canal can take place especially if there’s any swelling or infection in the ear canal. This usually is harmless but the nurse will tell you if this happens.

5. Eardrum Perforation: Even with the best care there is always a risk of damage to the eardrum; it is a very small risk. If this does occur then the nurse will inform you and provide advice regarding the management.

6. Loud noise / Hearing loss: microsuction can generate a loud noise in the ear canal due to the suction. In some people this can cause hearing loss (temporary or permanent).

7. Tinnitus (ringing type noise in-side the ear): This can be caused by the noise generated with microsuction or worsening of it if already experienced, however this is rare.

DOES MICROSUCTION HURT?

Microsuction may feel uncomfortable but should not hurt. If it hurts during the procedure please tell the nurse and they will stop.
